Fiat Chrysler to recall 862,520 USA vehicles over excess emissions

Jeeps in Detroit

Fiat Chrysler has recalled 862,520 gas-powered vehicles after on-road testing showed they might not meet emissions standards.

The recall was prompted by in-use emissions investigations conducted by the EPA and in-use testing conducted by Fiat Chrysler as required by USA regulations, the agency said.

The EPA said the discovery was made through routine testing carried out by the agency and the automaker.

The EPA said the scale of the recall meant it would be carried out in phases this year, beginning with the oldest vehicles, and owners may continue to drive their vehicles in the meantime.

Owners of affected vehicles need to wait until they receive notification from FCA prior to scheduling an appointment at the dealership. Although the VW, Audi, and Porsche cars easily passed the automaker-administered laboratory tests, independent testing showed that the diesel vehicles emitted nitrogen oxide far in excess of the U.S. legal limits while driving under real-world conditions.

Recalled vehicles include: 2011-2016 Dodge Journey, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2011-2014 Dodge Avenger, 2011-2012 Dodge Caliber, 2011-2016 Jeep Compass, and 2011-2016 Jeep Patriot.

Its U.S. -traded shares were down almost 1 percent.

The FCA recall comes two months after the company agreed to pay about $800m to resolve claims brought by the US Justice Department, the EPA and the State of California over its alleged use of illegal software to produce false results on diesel-emissions tests, violating clean-air rules.

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the agency welcomed the voluntary recall.

The EPA says Chrysler will fix the emissions issue by fitting the affected vehicles with a new catalytic converter.

NOx emissions in California are a major contributor to ambient ozone and to fine particulate matter pollution, which is associated with asthma emergency room visits, increased hospitalizations due to exacerbated chronic heart and lung diseases, and other serious health problems, CARB said. It is awaiting the outcome of a criminal probe.
