Google Celebrates Pi Day As Employee Calculates New World Record

Google employee breaks record for calculating

Google employee Emma Haruka Iwao has absolutely smashed the previous world record for calculating Pi by adding nearly nine trillion more digits. Google announced the milestone on Thursday March 14, also known as Pi Day (3.14).

Calculating it is a common task for supercomputers, and developer advocate Iwao used Google Cloud to calculate it to 31,415,926,535,897 digits. It's almost nine trillion digits more than the previous world record set by Peter Trueb in November 2016.

The value of pi was calculated using the y-cruncher application on 25 Google Cloud virtual machines and required a whopping 170 terabytes of data to complete.

Running the calculation on the cloud gives the mathematically curious a major upgrade in convenience, Google said. Over the 121.1 days, Google used 96 vCPUs, 1.4 TB of RAM, read 9.02 PB of data, and wrote 7.95 PB. During the entire time it took for calculations, the Google Cloud server were kept switched on to avoid any interruptions.

Ms Iwao said she had been fascinated by the number since she had been a child. That's when she first downloaded software to calculate pi on her PC. The previous world record was 22.4 trillion digits and it was achieved back in November, 2016 by Peter Trueb.

In mathematics pi is the ratio of a circle's radius to its circumference, has far more digits that continue infinitely without repetition. "But even if you don't work for Google, you can apply for various scholarships and programs to access computing resources", Iwao added. Later, when she was at university, she was fortunate enough to study under Dr Daisuke Takanashi, who held the record for most accurate Pi calculation at the time. I would list it here but I suspect that many digits may break the website.
