Google reportedly shifting employees away from tablet, laptop division

Google's Pixelbook

But it looks like the company might be slimming down its hardware portfolio, as the firm is reportedly moving employees from its tablet and laptop division.

A report from Business Insider claims that Google has axed "dozens" of employees from its laptop and tablet division.

Among the affected employees who were given notice of the cutbacks in the last two weeks are hardware engineers, technical program managers, and those who support program managers. Sources say projects have been canceled within the laptop and tablet division, prompting the changes, but that team members have been instructed to find new roles temporarily within the Google or Alphabet organization.

An internal source close to Business Insider told that Google is now going through "roadmap cutbacks" and hence the decision.

For now, Google is asking affected employees to seek temporary roles, meaning that the company could revert the alleged downsizing down the line.

Google's hardware division has grown exponentially in recent years, thanks to the success of its smart speakers and Pixel smartphones. Since the market is insanely competitive and margins are low, it seems Google decided that perhaps it would be best to concentrate its efforts on its products that are doing well for now. The report says that Google had "a bunch of stuff in the works" that now probably won't see the light of day. But with the Pixel C limited to running stock Android instead of Chrome OS like you get on more modern Google-based convertibles, and equipped with a buggy and often uncomfortable keyboard, the Pixel C was ill-prepared at the time to go up against competing products like the Surface 3.

Although the Pixel Slate and Pixelbook boast a premium design and pack decent hardware, their value proposition is low and software optimizations were questionable and often show the company's lack of commitment towards improving Chrome OS.

That said, while Google appears to be slowing down its hardware release plans, it doesn't seem to be giving up on making gadgets altogether.
