Marvel's First Movie With An Asian Lead Character Is Moving Forward

Destin Daniel Cretton

According to Deadline, Destin Daniel Cretton has just signed on to direct the film. The movie also featured future Captain Marvel star, Brie Larson.

Cretton's now helming Just Mercy (which he also wrote) with Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson, and picked up a lot of positive attention with the excellent Short Term 12.

In the wrong hands, the Kung Fu character of Shang-Chi could open up Marvel Studios to accusations of stereotyping (and indeed, he was created by Jim Starlin and Steve Englehart as a response to the popularity of the show Kung Fu).

Initially created during the martial arts cinema craze of the 1970s, Shang-Chi is now positioned as a milestone character for Marvel's ever-expanding cinematic universe. Cretton formed a solid working relationship with star Brie Larson, and went on to direct her again in 2017's The Glass Castle.

Previously, the studio recruited Asian-American screenwriter Dave Callaham to pen the script. Callaham is also co-wrote Wonder Woman 1984 with Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns and is now writing the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for Sony. It is clear that after Marvel Studios' unparalleled decade of success following Iron Man, Kevin Feige's next iterations of superhero franchises will distinguish themselves with ethnic diversity and inclusion, in front of and behind the camera. That film "shadows world-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson as he recounts his experiences and details the case of a condemned death row prisoner whom he fought to free", but we're here to talk about Shang-Chi. In recent years, he has become a prominent member of the Avengers and the Secret Avengers, with major roles in both Jonathan Hickman and Warren Ellis' runs on the titles.

What do you think about Destin Daniel Cretton as the director of the Shang-Chi film?

There's no timetable in place for Shang-Chi yet, and we don't know what the studio's approach to the character is going to be (aside from that "modernized" comment).
