Seahawks to sign free agent kicker Jason Myers

Pro Bowl kicker Jason Myers is leaving the New York Jets and is expected to sign with the Seattle Seahawks, a source told ESPN's Dianna Russini.

The biggest domino just fell Wednesday morning, when free safety Earl Thomas agreed to terms on a four-year deal for $55 million with the Baltimore Ravens. The Seahawks clearly have had a change of heart and that's probably because Myers is coming off the best season of his career. Myers made both of his field goal attempts in the preseason while Janikowski was 3-3, and Seattle decided two games into the preseason to keep Janikowski, who was then 40 and ranked 10th in National Football League history in field goals made. It started with him getting cut and ended with a trip to the Pro Bowl. Although Janikowski is known for his ability to hit long kicks, Myers can also hit those.

Like any deal in free agency, there's always some risk and this one is no different. Myers set another team mark by making seven field goals against Indianapolis last season.

Myers was signed by Seattle a few days after the end of the 2017 season as a possible replacement for Blair Walsh - he had been waived by Jacksonville six games into the 2017 season after making 11 of 15 field goals but also having a couple of critical misses.

Myers has also struggled on extra points since the National Football League moved the kick back in 2015.

Jason Myers #2 of the New York Jets kicks an extra point during the second quarter against the Tennessee Titan at Nissan Stadium on December 2, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee.
