Struff stuns ailing Zverev to reach Indian Wells 4th round

Zverev the owner of three Masters 1000 titles who has never made it to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells

While Japanese world number one Naomi Osaka progressed to the fourth round with victory over American Danielle Collins.

Alexander Zverev crashed out of the Indian Wells Masters, while rain wreaked havoc for world number one Novak Djokovic.

The duo were joined in the fourth round by seven-times Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, who defeated qualifier Christina McHale 6-2 7-5.

In a sign of the dejected nature of Zverev's performance, the 21-year-old won only five of his 20 second serve points and he was troubled by the power off Struff's forehand wing all match.

"I never played with two hands... it was the way to play when I was young". Before beginning his run in the desert last week, he owned a 1-3 record in Indian Wells.Struff dominated Zverev with his aggressive play from the baseline.

"She was playing really fast and flat, so that was something I was not really expecting", the German said of her opponent.

Earlier this year in Pune, Karlovic became the oldest ATP finalist since 1977, but then as he said after his Coric win, "Every week I am the oldest at something".

After an opening round win, Zverev sees a different outcome in his round of 32 matchup against fellow German tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff.

These two have split the two meetings, as Struff won in Dubai of this year in three sets, while Raonic won in the 2017 Wimbledon in straight sets.

"I have been sick for a week".

"I think I just got unlucky, I got a virus somewhere, and that's how it is", he said.

Zverev, the owner of three Masters 1000 titles who has never made it to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, said he would now focus on recuperating and preparing for the Miami Masters, where he ll be hoping to improve on his runner-up finish to John Isner past year. "Now it's about getting healthy and about recovering and preparing myself for Miami, because Miami is the tournament I do well in, history-wise". Then came Pune, and a three tie-break loss to Kevin Anderson in the final, followed by a second-round loss to No9 seed Kei Nishikori in Australia after nearly four hours and five sets.

"I think I created a lot of chances and a few maybe I didn't take the way I would have liked but he also stepped up well on his chances". "I just kept trying to plug away". No, his motivations for doubling his court time at tournaments are far simpler than that: "I like doubles".

Giron rued what might have been after failing to capitalise on a winning position.

He and McLachlan past year made the quarter-finals at the Mutua Madrid Open and Wimbledon and the semi-finals at the Australian Open and the Miami Open presented by Itau.
