Unvaccinated Kids Are Now Banned From Schools In Italy

Italy bans unvaccinated kids from school

If a child under age 6 has not been vaccinated, they will not able to attend kindergartens or schools.

Nicknamed the "Lorenzin law" after the health minister who introduced it, the law allows schools to suspend vaccinated children younger than six years old until they get the shots. The consequences for failing to comply with the legislation reportedly varies depending on how old the child is. It also fines parents of children between 6 and 16 years old about $560 if they can not prove their children have been vaccinated.

After months of heated debate, a law in Italy has finally entered into force, mandating that children must be vaccinated to be accepted into school.

They include vaccinations for chickenpox, polio, measles, mumps, and rubella.

"No vaccine, no school", she said of the new rules.

"No vaccine, no school", health minister Giulia Grillo said, per the BBC.

So far, it has been reported that in Bologna, authorities have sent suspension letters to parents over more than 300 children, and a total of 5,000 kids do not have up-to-date vaccination documents. The BBC added that Italian media reported regional authorities are "handling the situation in a number of different ways", with no notices of suspension reported in some areas and grace periods allowed in others.

"Italy is part of a global trend of distrust in mediators-doctors and scientists-who can interpret and explain data", La Sapienza University of Rome history of medicine and bioethics teacher Andrea Grignolio told CNN in 2018.

The law was implemented as a response to a recent spike in measles outbreaks.
