Disney rehires James Gunn to direct 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3'

Director James Gunn has been rehired by Walt Disney Studios to helem the third installment in the

According to Deadline, the decision to rehire him was made months ago after conversations between Disney and Marvel.

James Gunn has been reinstated as writer-director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after being fired by Disney past year.

James Gunn has been reinstated as director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Deadline reports that, less than a year after he was sacked from the company following the resurfacing of offensive tweets from years prior, Gunn has been rehired as the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the franchise he launched back in 2014. For those that may not recall, Gunn was sacked from Marvel last summer when some old tweets he had made resurfaced.

The Daily Caller unearthed the controversial tweets from the filmmaker. Even though Gunn signed on to write and direct the Suicide Squad sequel for Warner Bros. and DC, Marvel Studios apparently never considered another director to helm Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Gunn took to Twitter to announce his return to the movie saying, "I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months". "To be honest with you I don't know if I want to work for Disney", he said to Jonathan Ross at the time. "I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be". The script was completed before Gunn was sacked, so at least some work may be able to move forward without Gunn being involved.

Gunn with the Guardians cast in 2017. "At the end of the day, he was making jokes and he was being provocative and he was looking for that shock value, but they were just jokes".

According to the report from Deadline - which was confirmed with Marvel Studios and James Gunn's camp - Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn met with Gunn on multiple occasions to discuss what had led to his firing.

"For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn't living them out. Love to you all".
