First Android Q beta rolls out to Pixel phones

The first Android Q beta is now available to download and test on all the Pixel phones Google released so far, including the first-gen Pixel phones, which Google is still supporting "by popular demand".

Android Q beta 1 features: With Android Q Google is focussing more on the privacy of the users.

The operating system will also include enhanced support for foldable smartphones such as Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Huawei's Mate X devices.

As well as the above, it is hoped that there will be a system-wide dark mode implemented with an "override" option to force apps without dark mode to work with the night-friendly colour scheme. There are also expanded privacy-related permission pop-ups for new or newly-started apps. And although Google already listed some of the new features, it is yet to officially mention some of the hidden features. You need a Google Pixel - 1,2 or 3, it doesn't matter which version - to be eligible. It will only be available throughout the testing period, so once the stable Q release drops, this app will go away. Android Q has a new feature that lets you create a QR code for your Wi-Fi network, or scan a QR code to join a Wi-Fi network, directly in the device's Wi-Fi settings.

There are several other changes, including better support for sharing between applications, improved MIDI support, tighter integration with the Vulcan graphics API, faster application launching and more. Android Q is also adding "experimental support" for ANGLE on top of Vulkan, which is "a graphics abstraction layer designed for high-performance OpenGL compatibility across implementations". The example Google users is finding you're not connected to the internet when you open a browser.

After following the prompts, you'll be able to download the OTA update.

Once you're enrolled, you'll continue to be updated to every new version of the Android Q beta automatically, over-the-air.

We expect more devices will be added to the Android Q beta before long, but for now, it's pretty much a Pixel party.

In February, an early access version of Android Q suggested that the new OS may remove the back button, replacing it with a gesture that would be universal across all Android phones, rather than an option provided by the phone maker. Be warned: this is unstable beta software.
