Footage captures suspect being detained in New Zealand shootings

A terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, left at least 49 people dead and injured dozens of others on Friday.

William and Kate, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, praised the people of Christchurch and said that "no person should ever have to fear attending a sacred place of worship".

The government advised people not to go to mosques until further notice. I am curious though, pouring through this manifesto, looking at the language this killer used, you see "invasion", you see references to "replacement" which is what people in Charlottesville were protesting and crying as they were marching through the streets there.

Christchurch Police Commissioner Mike Bush said 41 people were killed at the Al Noor Mosque near Hagley Park, while seven were shot dead at the Linwood Avenue Mosque.

They say one person has been taken into custody.

In the manifesto, seen by SBS News, the man who identifies as Brenton Tarrant said he "only arrived in New Zealand to live temporarily whilst I planned and trained" but then chose to carry out an attack there. All times are local New Zealand time (UTC +13).

The couples signed off their message with the Maori phrase "Kia Kaha", meaning "stay strong".

His victims, he wrote, were chosen because he saw them as invaders who would replace the white race.

His behaviour hearkens back to an imperialist past where white people travelled to distant shores in modern New Zealand and Australia all the way from Europe to perpetrate genocide against indigenous populations and then claim the land for themselves.

New Zealand historically has had only a handful of mass shootings events.

"This appalling atrocity is an assault on all of us who cherish religious freedom, tolerance, compassion and community".

The survivors included 17 members of Bangladesh's cricket team, whose game against New Zealand on Saturday has been postponed, and a Palestinian man who fled for his life after seeing someone being shot in the head. Byman said that words have "consequences" and that the "demonization of Muslim communities" contributes to societal polarization and inspires violence.

"As we send our love to #christchurch, we must stand united here".

Ambulance staff take a man from outside a mosque in central Christchurch, New Zealand, Friday, March 15. "They may even be refugees here", Prime Minister Ardern reportedly said.

Speaking in Sydney, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the gunman as "an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist".

"It is clear this is one of New Zealand's darkest days", Ardern told reporters on Friday. That was when an Uzbek man drove a truck into a crowd of people in Stockholm, killing five.

United Kingdom police are stepping up patrols around mosques following the attack in New Zealand. "It was surreal." There were tales of heroism at the Linwood mosque too, where Syed Mazharuddin said a man wrestled a weapon off the attacker, who cut short his killing spree and ran to a waiting vehicle.

"The three major drivers of far-right extremism over the last six years, I would say are Tommy Robinson, the grooming scandals which have been manipulated by the far right. and the third thing I would say is they use the victims of islamist terrorism. Today is a tragedy not just for Muslims, but for all people of faith and goodwill". "We don't need to be a community that's living in perpetual fear or despair".

He added that British Muslims would feel anxiety today and called for mosques to be protected.
