Former Cardinals WR J.J. Nelson signs with Oakland Raiders

Yes Jon Gruden gave Jordy Nelson a $3.6 million Christmas gift but it’s not as bad as it sounds

Nelson was the Raiders' No. 1 wide receiver at the end of last season, and the team paid him a $3.6 million bonus late in 2018.

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Despite giving Jordy Nelson a $3.6 million roster bonus in December and coach Jon Gruden saying the veteran receiver would return to the Oakland Raiders in 2019, the team released Nelson on Thursday, the team announced. "If you watched Jordy play carefully the last four weeks when he's been healthy, you see what he's capable of doing". He caught 63 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns over 15 games in his only season with the Raiders.

The Packers drafted Nelson in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Kansas State.

Nelson wasn't an ideal complement to newcomers Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams (think quick slot type), so just add that $3.6 million to that $52.1 million guaranteed.

Nelson's 64 yards from scrimmage past year were a career-low for him after he had 299, 568 and 508 in his first three seasons, respectively.

Nelson, 26, played each of his first four National Football League seasons in Arizona after the Cardinals drafted him in the fifth round (159th overall) in 2015. He spent last season with the team and was active for all 16 contests.
