Huawei has a backup OS in case it loses access to Android

Banning Huawei from using Android and Windows sounds extreme, but with the USA asking its allies not to use the company's 5G equipment and even threatening to withhold intel from Germany if it does so, such a move isn't out of the question.

Speaking to Die Welt, Huawei executive Richard Yu says, "We have prepared our own operating system, if it turns out we can no longer use these systems, we will be ready and have our plan B".

Huawei lawyers on Thursday also pleaded not guilty to federal charges that its CFO Meng Wanzhou violated U.S. trade sanctions on dealing with Iran and hid its dealings in the country through a subsidiary. We last heard about Huawei's own Android OS rival back in May previous year.

Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian authorities in December and is awaiting an extradition trial set for May 8.

And because both Android and Windows are developed in the United States, Huawei's backup plan is to replace both with its own operating system that can run on the company's smartphones and PCs.

The world's second-largest handset player by market share now uses the Android OS for its handsets and Microsoft's Windows for its laptops and tablets.

Meng remains under house arrest in Canada while the courts proceed with the case to extradite her to the USA, which alleges that she deceiving financial institutions and put them in a position to violate sanctions against Iran.

Even though this is now the official confirmation, this is not the first time we're hearing reports of Huawei's proprietary operating system.

The trial is set for April 4. "We don't expect to use them, and to be honest, we don't want to use them", the spokesperson explained. After all, they do make their own smartphone processors.

Apparently it's called "Sunshine".
