Jose Mourinho wants all-English ties in Champions League quarter-finals

Liverpool Manchester United City and Tottenham are all still standing in the Champions League

Mourinho knows from firsthand experience how emotional all-Premier League encounters in Europe can be, having overseen several titanic clashes against Liverpool in the Champions League during his first stint as Chelsea manager, including the semi-finals in 2005 and 2007 respectively.

"But I would do two matches between English teams, which would mean two teams would be in the semi-finals".

Two English sides met in last season's Champions League, of course, when Liverpool eliminated Manchester City in the quarter-final stage.

In 2006/07 Liverpool oversaw a convincing 4-0 aggregate triumph over PSV, then beat rivals Chelsea on penalties, but AC Milan got revenge in the final.

"It will be a little bit like the World Cup in that players will finish at different times, so we'll have to have some preparation here, in terms of the pre-camps", said Southgate, who unveiled his England squad on Wednesday ahead of a pair of March friendlies. It's only the second time in the Champions League era that Spurs have reached this particular stage.

England play Holland in Guimaraes, Portugal, for a place in the final, on June 6, just five days after the Champions League final in Madrid.

The other clubs to have booked their spots are European giants Juventus and Barcelona, and surprise packages Porto and Ajax - the latter of whom dethroned Real Madrid last week. It's definitely up there with United's most dazzling nights under the lights.

Former Liverpool star Andrea Dossena believes that Juventus will not want to face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals. Barcelona against Juventus in a possible final or semi-final.

"So when they score goals, a lot of it is between themselves".

Last season City would have been hopeful of another semi-final showing, but were blown away by rivals Liverpool 3-0 in the first-leg, then fell to a 2-1 defeat at home.
