Measles Outbreak In Clark County, Washington, Up To 71 Confirmed Cases

Department of Health

She says doctors need to help parents distinguish fact from fiction.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday said that it will step up its measles vaccination activities among school children from Kindergarten to Grade six before the end of the academic year.

In the past week, an additional 25 measles cases were reported, with 22 confirmed in the Williamsburg neighborhood.

Some people think that instead of vaccines they can user nosodes, homeopathic remedies, but Health Canada has addressed the false claims around them in an advisory warning.

The Ministry of Health is working closely with Pharmac and Canterbury DHB to respond to the local Canterbury measles outbreak and ensure our national immunisation schedule continues on track elsewhere in the country.

"How we talk to parents who have questions about vaccines can have a direct effect on improving their confidence and supporting them in getting their children vaccinated", Tam says in her statement.

She's urging doctors across the country to take the time to answer questions from anxious parents about vaccinating their kids to help stop the spread of measles.

"We are targeting to vaccinate our schoolchildren at this time before school closes on April 5, since we are nearly finished vaccinating in our health centers", said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. Anyone who has received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine is highly unlikely to get measles.

There is no cure for measles, but most people fully recover within two or three weeks.

Measles is a viral infection that is serious for small children but is easily preventable by a vaccine. Tam, in her statement, talks about parents who in the past few weeks have spoken of the hard recoveries that took weeks or months, the permanent disabilities some children face and, in some cases, deaths. "From my perspective, even one child dying of measles is unacceptable", says Tam, as a pediatric infectious disease specialist.
