Multiple fatalities after mass shooting at New Zealand mosque

After New Zealand massacre Trump downplays white nationalism threat

Police have warned people to avoid mosques anywhere in New Zealand following two shootings with multiple fatalities at two mosques in Christchurch.

Earlier Friday afternoon, police had urged people to stay indoors as authorities responded to a shooting at the Masjid Al Noor mosque.

People in center of the city should stay indoors, police said.

TVNZ reported that New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addressed the nation shortly after Friday's attack.

A video posted on Twitter showed Bangladesh's cricket team walking away from the mosque.

The photographer working for the publication also said he had seen three seriously injured people lying on the steps of the mosque.

An unconfirmed report from the New Zealand Herald indicated that there was a 37-page manifesto that outlined the motivation for the mass murder.

"I have friends at both Islamic centres - it's terrifying and I don't know what to do".

The outlet added, citing former president of the Muslim Association of Canterbury, Mohammed Jama, that around 01:40 p.m. local time on Friday, a gunman entered a mosque in Christchurch and opened fire as around 300 people were inside the building praying.

The injured were very quiet, Jellie said.

The livestream began as the gunman drove to the Al Noor Mosque in Deans Ave, parking his auto in a nearby driveway.

An ESPN cameraman covering the team's on-going New Zealand tour captured the clearly shocked players leaving the mosque after escaping.

Apart from numerous witness reports of casualties, a reporter following the Bangladesh cricket team, who are now in New Zealand, tweeted that the team had "escaped from a mosque near Hagley Park where there were active shooters".

The whole of Christchurch is in lockdown including schools across the city.

Another tries to flee by running towards the camera before being shot.

The Ministry of Health tweeted: "The public is advised not to attend Christchurch Hospital unless it's an emergency. This happened at about 1.45pm".

A taxi driver in Deans Ave told Newstalk ZB that a jogger in the park said shots had been fired inside the mosque.

"All students are safe and those who are on the Climate Strike have been taken to a safe area by the staff accompanying them".
