New Zealand students walk out of class, kicking off global strike

James Shaw speaks to the crowd at the climate change protest at Parliament in Wellington

Young Derry students at a number of Derry schools will tomorrow leave their classrooms in a staged "strike" to attend a protest on climate change.

"It's one of those where politicians and the country unite in being shocked and angry that in this peaceful, attractive country, we've got this happening to anyone".

The marches are part of a worldwide student strike movement, which started in August 2018 when 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg began protesting outside her parliament on school days.

According to a United Nations report, global temperatures could rise by 1.5°C, a threshold that scientists say will bring dire consequences to the planet, by as early as 2030 if greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate.

"We want our government to understand that there is no planet B", says Rand Abounahia, another one of the strike organizers.

"We are calling on all students to join us to take action on our future!"

The strike's platform calls for 100 percent renewable energy by 2030; halting all fossil fuel infrastructure projects; basing government policy on scientific research; requiring environmental education in schools; banning fracking and mountaintop mining; and changing the agricultural industry, among other measures. From there, they will all head to city hall and Province House.

Ardern said that when she spoke to Shaw afterwards, he told her he was "doing fine".

"There is no doubt about it that there are some people who are filled with rage and sometimes they can see politicians as people they can take that out on", she said.

Through social media, the group has also been able to communicate with protests across the globe.

Ms Bradford said the attack on Mr Shaw appeared to have been politically motivated and increased security for MPs needed to be considered. "We've been trying to organize video exchanges or some sort of support for one another".

On Friday, kids across the Garden State will skip school for a global cause.

However, he had been touched by the amount of support he and his wife, Annabel, and staff at Parliament had received.

"Politician have been talking about climate change for 30 years".

"This is a crisis", says Fisher.
