Peter Strzok: Hillary Clinton was 'not considered a target' in email investigation

FBI agent Peter Strzok testifies before the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees

Former FBI attorney Lisa Page told congressional investigators past year that Peter Strzok - a senior FBI agent in the probes into the Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump campaigns - joined special counsel Robert Mueller's team because if it resulted in impeachment it could be good for his career.

According to recently released transcripts of her testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, Page explained that Strzok initially had reservations about joining the Mueller team because if it didn't result in anything material it could delay his upward mobility within the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"The just revealed FBI Agent Lisa Page transcripts make the Obama Justice Department look exactly like it was, a broken and corrupt machine", Trump tweeted.

But if the President is referring to Comey's ultimate decision not to recommend charges, Page's testimony does not show that former FBI Director James Comey "lied".

Peter Strzok told Congress in 2018 that he deleted communications with Lisa Page, but he claimed he did so for "personal" reasons. Both Page and Strzok were involved in the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's handling of classified information, as well as the early days of the bureau's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and briefly served on the special counsel's team.

Mr. Strzok also disputed the meaning of the now-infamous text exchange where Ms. Page anxious Mr. Trump would become president and he replied "No".

But Page's testimony was perhaps the most salient evidence yet that the Justice Department improperly interfered with the FBI's supposedly independent conclusions on Clinton's criminal culpability, Ratcliffe alleged.

In a statement Thursday, Strzok attorney Aitan Goelman said his client welcomed the release of the transcript. President Trump fired Comey in 2017.

Asked in general terms whether he had "ever been part of the FBI's efforts to infiltrate a US political campaign" or "been part of an effort to put a spy in a USA political campaign", Strzok said no. He said under oath the FBI investigative team unanimously believed Clinton shouldn't be prosecuted. "And, we're going to say, we're going to get this out and we're going to put it in ways that people can easily understand, not a large dump, we're going to take it methodically as we go, as we get them cleared, and we're going to get them out to the American people". McCabe has said he could not recall such a meeting taking place.
