Trump vetoes legislation to strike down his emergency declaration for border wall

"Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it", he said.

Congressional critics do not appear to have the votes to override Trump's veto.

As the USA and the European Union struggle to iron out their differences on trade, Trump said, "they are willing to talk to us and if they don't talk to us, we're going to do something that's going to be pretty severe economically".

A dozen defecting Republicans joined Senate Democrats in approving the joint resolution on Thursday, which capped a week of confrontation with the White House as both parties in Congress strained to exert their power in new ways.

Twelve Republican senators banded together to deliver the forceful rebuke after expressing concerns that Trump's use of the national emergency declaration as an end-run around Congress violates the separation of powers and sets a bad precedent that a would-be future Democratic president could follow to unilaterally drive their agenda.

Earlier today, President Trump thanked Republicans who voted against the measure. "This will help stop Crime, Human Trafficking, and Drugs entering our Country", the president tweeted.

Trump vetoes legislation to strike down his emergency declaration for border wall

Mr Trump had declared the emergency in February after Congress refused his requests for $5.7bn (£4.4bn) to construct a border wall - a campaign promise. That declaration was an effort to circumvent Congress to secure more money for his southern border wall.

"The fact that this is an emergency is undeniable", Nielsen said.

Alexander added that he shares the president's goal of border security, but warned allowing Trump to redirect money without authorization could set a unsafe precedent.

The president has said he wants a wall to prevent immigrants from crossing into the United States illegally.

The border wall project still faces a variety of legal challenges, and despite Trump's veto, House and Senate votes against the emergency declaration could carry some weight in the courts.

Attorney General William Barr is also at the President's veto event.
