Two top Facebook execs are leaving the company

Mark Zuckerberg

Last week, Facebook announced some major changes for its platform.

A campaigner from a political pressure group protests as founder and CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg failed to attend a meeting on fake news held by Parliament's Digital, Culture Media and Sport committee in London November 27, 2018.

Facebook's top executive in charge of all products, Chris Cox, the longtime confidant of Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, is leaving the company, the highest-level departure at the social media giant and follows almost two years of sustained crises.

While Cox gave no specific reason for his move, he noted that Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled a new direction away from being the "digital town square" to focus on smaller-scale, private interactions.

Also departing is WhatsApp Vice President Chris Daniels, adding to a string of recent high-profile exits from Facebook's product and communications teams. "As part of this, I'm sad to share the news that Chris Cox has made a decision to leave the company", he wrote.

Zuckerberg said on Thursday that Olivan will now lead the effort to integrate Facebook apps, a key move as the company encrypts conversations on more of its messaging services and makes them compatible.

It is also interesting to see the head of WhatsApp Chris Daniels leaving Facebook right now.

Daniels took the helm of WhatsApp after founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton left the messaging app previous year, reportedly over disagreements about the increased integration of WhatsApp's operations with Facebook's. He will be replaced by Will Cathcart. Fidji Simo, who has worked on Facebook's video startegy, will be in charge of the Facebook app, but won't have the VP of Product title Cox did. And Simo, along with the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, head of Messenger Stan Chudnovsky, and head of WhatsApp Will Cathcart, will report directly to Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg phrased that more delicately, noting that "We both realized we had too much important work to do to improve our products for society".
