Bernie Sanders’ campaign workers unionize, marking a first in American history

Bernie Sanders’ staff unionizes in presidential campaign first

The 77-year-old senator, the oldest candidate in the Democratic race to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020, went to a walk-in clinic to be checked and was given a "clean bill of health", Sanders spokeswoman Arianna Jones said in a statement.

Sanders, a progressive who is a staunch supporter of unions, said on Twitter he was "proud that our campaign is the first presidential campaign to unionize". "On this campaign and when we are in the White House, we are going to make it easier for people to join unions, not harder".

At that time, Sanders said his 2018 re-election campaign to the Senate representing Vermont established "some of the strongest sexual harassment policies in the country", including requiring training for all employees and providing staffers with a way to report harassment to an independent firm.

Sanders is set to appear in Henderson, Nevada on Saturday for a campaign rally at 2:30 p.m.in Morrell Park.

Sanders also ran for the presidency in 2016, gathering considerable support, but lost to eventual Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Negotiations on a contract are expected to begin soon, the union said, and the bargaining unit could ultimately reach 1,000 members. "Employees may exercise their right to strike under certain circumstances, as provided by federal labor law".
