Christchurch attack: Outrage as senator blames immigration laws, victims

A teenager breaks an egg on the head of Senator Fraser Anning while he holds a press conference Saturday

The man was filming on his phone as he smashed the egg on top of Mr Anning's head.

In response, Senator Anning swings two punches at the young man, at least one of which connects with the young man's head.

He said while others are mourning and expressing sympathy for the families and loved ones of the victims of this heinous hate crime, Senator Anning's remarks were highly insensitive as well as totally unwarranted and racist. A Victoria Police spokesman said officers arrested a 17-year-old boy from Hampton who was released pending further inquiries.

"As always, left-wing politicians and the media will rush to claim that causes of today's shootings lie with gun laws or those who hold nationalist views but this is all cliched nonsense".

"The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program, which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place".

"These comments are appalling and they're ugly and they have no place in Australia".

Home Secretary Sajid Javid accused him of fanning the flames of extremism, while Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the views "disgusting".

"It's not somerthing my government assosicates with or any one would seek to associate with".

An Australian senator is being heavily criticized for lashing out at Muslim immigrants in the wake of the horrific shootings at two New Zealand mosques.

Labor Opposition Leader Bill Shorten also slammed the "obscure" Senator.

In August, he called for a "final solution" to the Muslim "immigration problem", evoking a reference to the Nazis' "final solution" terminology used to target Jews during the Holocaust.

"It is heart-breaking that people, praying in a mosque, should be mowed down".

He said police have told the multi-faith and multicultural communities in Queensland they will do everything they can to ensure their safety, even though they know there is no credible threat at this time in the State.

Following the backlash, Senator Anning has continued to defend his comments.
