EU, Canada and USA impose new sanctions on Russian Federation

Canada imposes more sanctions on Russian individuals, companies over Ukraine

The U.S. sanctions freeze all property and interests in property belonging to the designated individuals and entities, and prohibit U.S. persons from transacting with them.

The officials sanctioned include the head and deputy head of the border directorate of Russian federal security service for the Republic of Crimea and City of Sevastopol, three commanding officers of Russian border patrol boats and an anti-submarine ship which actively participated in actions that prevented Ukrainian vessels from accessing their coastline on the Sea of Azov, two heads of service of Russian control points, and a Russian armed forces commander responsible for military forces in the region, including the illegally annexed Crimea and Sevastopol.

"This joint initiative with our partners in the European Union and Canada reinforces our shared commitment to impose targeted and meaningful sanctions in response to the Kremlin's attempts to disregard global norms and undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity", he added.

Canada imposed sanctions on 114 people and 15 entities in response to Russia's military action against the Ukrainian ships, while the European Union sanctioned eight more Russians over the standoff.

The Treasury also imposed sanctions on two Ukrainian separatists for backing "illegitimate separatist government elections" in eastern Ukraine, Treasury said.

The Russian navy captured 24 Ukrainian sailors during the clash. The measures now apply to a total of 170 persons and 44 entities.

Twenty-four Ukrainian crew members were detained in the naval incident. A statement released by Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland read: "Canada and its allies are unwavering in our support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity".

In the more than five years after Moscow invaded and illegally annexed neighbouring Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula, relations between the European Union and Russian Federation have soured to the point that the two sides, along with the rest of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance and the Kremlin's hodgepodge of equally anti-Western allies, are now deeply involved in a second Cold War.

Washington has imposed restrictions on Russian companies Oceanpribor, Fiolent factory, Sudokomposite, New Projects, Consol-Stroy, Zvezda, Yaroslavsky Shipbuilding Plant and Zelenodolsk Gorky Plant.

Separately on Friday, Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska sued the United States alleging that it had overstepped its legal bounds in imposing sanctions on his companies.

Oleg Deripaska, Russian aluminum tycoon, sanctioned by the U.S. previous year, is meanwhile taking the USA government to court arguing that the restrictions were based "on false rumor and innuendo" and violated the United States constitution.
