Federation Internationale de Football Association backs 48-team World Cup in 2022

FIFA mulls proposal for 24-team Club World Cup; Concacaf would get 3 slots

India has won the rights to host the 2020 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, which will be the seventh edition of the biennial tournament.

The European Club Association (ECA) says any new competitions should be part of an agreed framework for the worldwide match calendar post-2024.

Friday's meeting of FIFA's ruling council chose to "explore this possibility further and analyse if a joint expansion proposal that meets all the necessary requirements can be submitted to the FIFA Council and the FIFA Congress in June".

The FIFA Council is also expected to decide to continue exploring plans to expand the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams with the possibility of additional hosting in other countries.

"I am feeling very positive from the discussions and I am sure that at the end we will be very happy", he said.

Gianni Infantino, the Federation Internationale de Football Association president, defied prior warnings that he faced a near-impossible diplomatic job to find a neighbouring nation to share hosting duties in the Middle East as he said an initial feasibility study showed it was possible for 48 teams to compete in 2022.

The letter, viewed by the AP, was signed by top executives from 14 leading European clubs, including ECA head Andrea Agnelli of Juventus.

"[We are] firmly against any potential approval of a revised CWC - no ECA clubs would take part", it said.

The ECA's letter was addressed to Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin, who has been asked to explain the position at the Fifa Council meeting, which is taking place in Miami.

A final decision is due to be made at the meeting of FIFA Congress in Paris in June.

Barcelona President Josep Bartomeu backs a revamp of the competition, just not until the entire calendar for club and national team matches is reconfigured for 2024 and beyond to cope. That is the slot previously reserved for the Confederations Cup, which serves as a test event in a host nation a year before the World Cup.

The champion of the Concacaf Champions League represents the region in the current Club World Cup structure. Oceania would get one representative.

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das had confirmed the development to the Indian Express and said, "We want to bid for the under-17 women's world cup and wanted to understand the procedure". Teams would play two to five matches over a maximum of 18 days.

Video assistant referees have also been approved for this year's Women's World Cup, which starts in France on June 7.
