Gambino 'mob boss' shot dead outside NY home

By Allan Lengel

The reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family, Francesco "Frank" Cali, was shot dead outside his NY home, police said.

This is the first hit on a Gambino boss since Paul Castellano was gunned down in 1985 in front of Sparks Steak House. According to a report published by CNN, Francesco "Frank" Cali was scooped up by investigators on the front steps of his Staten Island residence with fatal gunshot wounds across his torso.

Frank Cali, 53, was shot multiple times and then run over by a pickup truck, according to the New York Daily News.

Cali's body was found in an area of Staten Island that has been home to some of New York's most notorious mobsters and their families.

Police said surveillance video captures the shooter, and the pick-up believed to be the getaway truck.

Authorities are looking at several theories including whether Gotti, the younger brother of late Gambino godfather John Gotti and a capo before going to prison, is now looking to claw back his stake in the family business, the Daily News writes.

Cali was the boss of the Gambino crime family - one of five in the city operating as Italian-American mafia.

According to local media in NY, he took the helm of the Gambino family in 2015, replacing Domenico Cefalu.

Cali was the first NY crime family boss shot in 34 years, according to WPIX.

Federal prosecutors had referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Gambino organization.

Business Insider said Cali essentially was in charge of New York City's city's food industry and was worth an estimated $30 million.

Staten Island's affluent Todt Hill neighbourhood is renowned for its crime connections. "Very surprising, but I guess old habits die hard".

Last October, Bonanno crime family associate Sylvester Zottola, 71, was gunned down at a Bronx McDonald's drive-thru as he waited for a coffee. His son Salvatore had been shot three months earlier outside the family home, but survived.

"It takes a certain type of evil to murder a friend in their own home, and then console the grieving relatives", said Federal Bureau of Investigation assistant director in charge William Sweeney.
