Google jumps on the foldable phone bandwagon, files patent

Google Foldable Smartphone Design Tipped by Patent

As well as a clamshell-style unit (Fig.2), we also see what looks like a Z-folding approach (Fig.3), and possibly what taking a selfie or video calling may look like on the unit (the first image). Another sketch shows the device folded in a "Z" shape.

In particular, creating sturdy, durable Z-fold displays (i.e., displays with both inward and outward folds) is greatly complicated by the fragility of the thin-film layers in the display stack.

The patent applications also show a double foldable phone it seems which would allow for a screen on the outside of the phone when it is folded down - we can not image the amount of engineering required to have two hinges on a foldable smartphone.

A Google patent has emerged revealing a design concept for a folding display.

It's likely that every major phone brand will eventually bring a folding device to market, but Google does have one advantage over the competition. And it looks like Google could be next to join the list.

Google’s foldable patent hints at a compact clamshell phone

The search engine giant's interest in foldable smartphones is being speculated to be more inclined towards the software aspect of their designs, because typically, Google does not produce displays or handsets on its own.

These types of patents frequently appear but only rarely do we get to see a finished product based on them. It only mentions it's to be used in a "modern computing device". This is a form factor a few other companies are looking at, including Samsung, for a Fold-successor. The most interesting part is that Google doesn't manufacturer displays. You would expect in the future this would change, if foldable phones take off.

It should come as no surprise that Google is diving deep into gaming.

We are three months into 2019 and there is enough evidence to support the fact that foldable phones are finally turning into a reality. The patent filed by the company indicated it was working on a flip phone.
