Left 4 Dead's developers are Back 4 Blood with new spiritual successor

Back 4 Blood

The developer is keeping details on Back 4 Blood close to the vest; the studio hasn't released any images of the game and teased "new features we aren't ready to talk about just yet". "Interactive-Entertainment-Turtle-Rock-Studios/?feedref=JjAwJuNHiystnCoBq_hl-SP7CEH_PxTjduXJ0SDrbU6qcp-o_pnudlUwsb5apQ1S4gUE65BTfjH3-pSuqdv0gW3cb3F4oTIgUqCPafFkgu67Ap_pA_yJ1XPgPy1DuJnY">announced Back 4 Blood, a team-based zombie shooter that aims to modernize the L4D concept with "new features and state-of-the-art technology". It's a somewhat complicated story, but part way into the development of the first Left 4 Dead, Valve acquired Turtle Rock, forming a new studio, Valve South, in 2008.

The team isn't using the phrase "spiritual successor" for itself, but it's clear from its announcement that that's basically what we have here. "We get to return to a genre that was born in our studio with over ten years of additional experience and zombie ideas racked up in our brains", Turtle Rock cofounder and Design Director Chris Ashton said in a statement.

Sadly for some, this does mean that this very much is not Left for Dead 3. "We know this title has to stand out and we fully intend to make that happen", said co-founder and creative director Phil Robb.

There is now no release date or other information given for this new game announcement, which makes it such a unusual way to reveal a game. "We love being able to announce, so we can start working with the community right away".

"Is this game going to be a Battle Royale game?". After that it created Evolve with THQ and then 2K Games. Interactive Entertainment will serve as Back 4 Blood's publisher.

The game is slated for an Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC release, though a specific date hasn't been revealed at this time.

When will the community get to play?

The studio made a decision to announce the game so soon because it is looking for community feedback early on in the development process.

Back 4 Blood is a hugely ambitious project and we need the best of the best to come join us.
