New Zealand pledges reforms as relaxed gun laws scrutinized

Chicago Muslim groups step up security after New Zealand mosque attacks

"Love always wins over hate. In the wake of this disgusting act of bigoted violence, which appears to be rooted in Islamophobia, New York stands with the Muslim community as we always have and always will", the statement read in part.

Doctors at Christchurch hospital said they worked through the night in 12 operating theatres to do what they could to save the survivors. Thirty- six people were still being treated on Saturday, 11 of whom remained in intensive care.

From what we know, it does appear to have been well planned.

There was a heavy police presence at the hospital where families of the wounded had gathered.

Another victim of the Christchurch mosque attacks tried to wrestle the gunman's weapon off him in a desperate bid to save others, it has emerged.

She said that she had already instructed the ODESC (Officials Committee for Domestic and External Security Coordination) to report to Cabinet on Monday on Friday's events with a view to strengthening the country's systems on a range of fronts including, but not limited to, firearms, border controls, enhanced information-sharing with Australia, and any practice reinforcement of their watch-list processes. Five other Pakistani citizens were still unaccounted for, he said.

The attack, apparently broadcast live for a time on social media, is the deadliest mass killing in New Zealand since 1943. The couple was due to fly out Sunday. They have not heard from him since. 48 people were injured in the terrorist attack that was carried out during Friday prayers at Al Noor Masjid and a smaller mosque in Linwood.

Whether in the form of "lone-wolf" or coordinated attacks, in yesterday's shooting we see analogues not only in the terrorism against Muslims in the Quebec and Finsbury Park mosque attacks, but in the terrorism against Jews in Pittsburgh, against African-Americans in Charleston, and even against the concept of multiculturalism itself in the 2011 Norway attacks.

Facebook, Twitter and Google scrambled to take down the gunman's video, which was widely available on social media for hours after the bloodbath.

The attacks took place during Friday prayers.

The video showed the killer was carrying a shotgun and two fully automatic military assault rifles, with an extra magazine taped to one of the weapons so that he could reload quickly. He also had more assault weapons in the trunk of his auto, along with what appeared to be explosives. New Zealand's police commissioner, Mike Bush, said they were "working through" whether one or both of them had any involvement in this incident.

Tributes have been left at the scenes of the attack.

Tarrant's relatives in the Australian town of Grafton, in New South Wales, contacted police after learning of the shooting and were helping with the investigation, local authorities said. Tarrant had held such a licence since December 2017. Regardless of whether terrorist attacks are perpetrated by white or Islamist extremists, their narratives must not be enabled through whataboutery.

Meanwhile, Cuomo ordered One World Trade Center's spire, the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge and the Kosciuszko Bridge be lit in blue and red tonight to show solidarity with the people of New Zealand and the Muslim community. The country has historically had a low homicide rate.
