No Man's Sky Beyond Expands The Game's Multiplayer

No Man's Sky

He isn't calling it a traditional MMO, even though it will have "many recognisable online elements", as it will require no subscription, won't feature any microtransactions, and will simply be a free update to all No Man's Sky players.

The big picture: No Man's Sky was a flop when it launched but in the two and a half years since, Hello Games has worked tirelessly to improve the title and it has shown. Basically, No Man's Sky Online will allow players everywhere in the game universe to meet and play together. This major update introduced game changing features, such as an all-new multiplayer mode, unlimited base building, commanding freighters and much more! The massive No Man's Sky Next expansion previous year added significant new features fans had dreamed of like multiplayer, space battles, and base building.

No Man's Sky Online is one component of a three-pronged update dubbed No Man's Sky: Beyond. Murray says that he will "talk more about each component when we know we can be precise" but says that more info will be coming in "weeks", not months. Entitled No Man's Sky Beyond, it'll be free to all players and will include something that the team is dubbing "No Man's Sky Online". I'm assuming this means that everyone won't exist on servers, where you could potentially run into hundreds or thousands of players all flying around the same instance, but it's not clear yet. Falling short of expectations at launch, in part thanks to marketing, but also because it was kinda tiresome, developer Hello Games has since transformed it into an engaging, busy space sim that finally lives up to its grand ambitions. Beyond will be our most ambitious chapter so far, and something we've been working ridiculously hard on. It remains to be seen how No Man's Sky: Beyond will affect the game's rather mixed legacy.

In the press release, Murray said that each update to No Man's Sky has been more successful than the last, Next especially so. To some NEXT may have felt like a natural end-point for our journey, but for us it was another step on a longer voyage.
