Reported Christchurch mosque shooting sees armed police deployed and schools in lockdown

Ranstorp told Swedish radio Friday that the New Zealand shooter, who killed at least 49 people in two mosques in Christchurch on Friday, claims to "have been in contact with Breivik's sympathizers".

Young children are among the 48 people wounded in the attack and are being treated for gunshot wounds.

"New Zealand Police alerted us to a video on Facebook shortly after the livestream commenced and we quickly removed both the shooter's Facebook and Instagram accounts and the video", Mia Garlick, Facebook's director of policy for Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement.

Police took three men and a woman into custody.

YouTube star Pewdiepie made an effort to distance himself from a perpetrator in the fatal Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shootings after the attacker reportedly called out "subscribe to Pewdiepie" during the terror incident.

One man will appear at a Christchurch court on Saturday.

Whether there are more suspects - Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said the government has no reason to believe there are more suspects, but was not assuming that was the case and intelligence services and police were working on establishing this.

Givealitte: This New Zealand-based crowdfunding platform is hosting a live campaign where people can donate for victim support. Seven were killed at the Linwood mosque nearby, and one victim passed away at the hospital.

Beyond that, the New Zealand Police noted in a separate release that in 20 years, from December 1998 to December 2018, there were a total of 15 murders committed by someone, who had a firearms license.

That said, the two countries are dramatically different in size, with New Zealand having a population of less than 4.8 million people while the US has an estimated 327.2 million people, but the gun violence rates are notably different when looked at with comparitive sizes.
