As New Zealand shooter appears in court, world rallies behind Muslim communities

The man charged in relation to the Christchurch massacre Brenton Tarrant gestures in the dock for his appearance for mur

Following Friday's shooting at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern vowed to change the country's gun laws, though she didn't immediately specify how.

"Our investigations are in their early stages and we will be looking closely to build a picture of any of the individuals involved and all of their activities prior to this horrific event", Police Commissioner Mike Bush said.

A total of four people were arrested following the massacre - one of whom was in possession of a firearm but with the intention of assisting police, and was released a short time later.

Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian citizen, appeared in a Christchurch District Court Saturday.

Three people are in custody over the mass shootings.

Residents pay their respects by placing flowers for the victims of the mosques attacks in Christchurch.

The New Zealand premier was showered with enormous praises internationally for the gesture, which made it clear that New Zealand stood by the Muslim community that was the centre of Friday's horrifying terror attacks rooted in racial as well as religious hatred. In a rambling document that's dozens of pages long, he says he was inspired by Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik, who was responsible for the deaths of 77 people in 2011.

The Daraghmehs are of Palestinian origin, but have Jordanian citizenship, like several others listed as Jordanian nationals among those killed and wounded in the mosque attacks.

"I can tell you right now, our gun laws will change", Ardern said.

New Zealand has previously tried to change its gun laws, with the most recent attempt coming two years ago.

A friend of Wasseim's, Carolyne Phillips, who was at the hospital with him, said he had undergone surgery for a perforated bowel, an injury to his pelvis and to get shrapnel and bone out of his hip socket. Tarrant, charged with one count of murder, will remain in custody until his next court appearance on April 5.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called the incident "an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence" and "New Zealand's darkest day".

A gunman opened fire on worshippers in two mosques in Christchurch, killing 49 people.

Mohamed Hassan, a journalist who lived in New Zealand for most of his life, says Muslims have been grieving alongside numerous other communities.

It is reported that the man who has been charged with murder is named Brenton Tarrant.

"As soon as New Zealanders hear that someone was legally able to acquire, as I'm advised, those weapons and carry out this event, that will raise enormous questions with our gun laws, and that is why we will respond swiftly", she explained.

The firearms included two semi-automatic rifles, two shotguns and a lever-action weapon, she said, speaking to reporters in Wellington before heading to Christchurch.

"I still don't know where he is", she said.
