Christchurch survivor recalls how he grabbed gunman's rifle forcing him to flee

Abdul Aziz 48 is being hailed as a hero for preventing more deaths during Friday prayers at the Linwood mosque in Christchurch in New Zealand

But Mr Aziz, whose four sons and dozens of others remained in the mosque while he faced off with the gunman, said he thinks it is what anyone would have done. Around 20 innocent people were seriously injured and 17 went missing after the ghastly attack.

The atrocities took place in Masjid Al Noor mosque, where at least 41 people were killed and another seven were shot dead inside the suburban Linwood Masjid Mosque.

The death toll in the New Zealand mosque shootings rose to 50 on Sunday when police found another body at one of the mosques, as families waited for authorities to formally identify victims and release their bodies for burial.

Other survivors also spoke of the frightening scenes they experienced during the shooting, speaking about the screaming and other sights and sounds inside the mosque.

The gunman, who was charged with one count of murder Saturday, allegedly killed 49 people after attacking two mosques in the deadliest mass shooting in New Zealand's modern history. Seven were killed at the Linwood mosque.

Forty-eight-year-old Abdul Aziz is being called hero for his fearless actions during the Christchurch shooting at the Linwood Mosque last Friday.

Alabi said he heard a voice outside the mosque at about 1:55 pm local time and stopped the prayer he was leading to peak outside the window.

He saw a man wearing black military-style gear and a helmet holding a large gun, and assumed it was a police officer. At first, the imam thought he was a police officer but then saw two bodies and heard the man shouting obscenities.

Despite his actions, Mr Aziz denied he was a hero in the interview, saying: "I don't think I am a hero [and] I don't like to be called a hero because as a human being... if there was someone else there they would do the same". "This is a killer", he said.

"He (Aziz) went after him, and he managed to overpower him, and that's how we were saved".

"Then this brother [Aziz] came over".

There were tales of heroism at the Linwood mosque too, where Syed Mazharuddin said a man wrestled a weapon off the attacker, who cut short his killing spree and ran to a waiting vehicle.

Abdul Aziz, 48, whose four sons were inside the mosque, also reportedly picked up the attacker's abandoned gun and hurled it at his auto, helping to scare him off.

The gunman returned firing but Mr Aziz said he ran past parked cars which prevented him from being shot.

He said the gunman ran back to the vehicle for a second time to grab another weapon.

Aziz said: "He gets into his auto and I just got the gun and threw it on his window like an arrow and blasted his window".

"The windshield shattered; that's why he got scared". "This is a killer", he said, adding that he then yelled at the congregation to get down. The Christchurch resident said he chased the attacker down the street to a red light before he made a U-turn and drove away.
