Controversial Australian senator egged after New Zealand shootings statement

His remarks were widely condemned, and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said a motion censuring Anning will be tabled when Parliament resumes its session.

In a viral video that has been doing rounds on social media, a youngster smashed an egg on Anning's head in Melbourne while the senator was speaking at a press conference.

A staffer for Senator Anning then separates the senator from the young man, while supporters of the senator tackle his attacker to the ground.

Queensland Senator Fraser Anning made the controversial statement after 49 people were killed and more than 40 injured at two Christchurch mosques on Friday.

The 17-year-old was later released pending further investigation, according to the network. Stating that he was opposed to "any form of violence", Anning claimed that the atrocity highlighted the "growing fear over an increasing Muslim presence", in both New Zealand and Australia.

He said while others are mourning and expressing sympathy for the families and loved ones of the victims of this heinous hate crime, Senator Anning's remarks were highly insensitive as well as totally unwarranted and racist.

A number of armed terrorists are believed to have carried out attacks on two mosques in Christchurch in New Zealand, with one perpetrator live-streaming his actions on Facebook.

He also posted a statement on Twitter in which he tried to draw a link between Muslim immigration and violence.

More than 300,000 people have signed a change.org petition calling for Senator Anning's expulsion from parliament.

"These comments are appalling and ugly and have no place in Australia and he should be frankly ashamed of himself".

For Anning, however, the attacks happened because of "Muslim migration".

"The senator in question, I do not think operates by the beat of the same drum as the rest of us", he said. "Those views have no place in Australia, let alone the Australian Parliament".

In the wake of the shooting, she tweeted pictures of emails she received telling her - like Mr Anning's comments - that the killings were the fault of Muslims.
