Johnny Manziel signs contract with AAF

HAMILTON ON- NOVEMBER 3 Johnny Manziel #2 of the Montreal Alouettes fires a pass against the Hamilton Tiger Cats in a CFL game at Tim Hortons Field

Johnny Manziel is officially joining the AAF.

Johnny Football is heading to Memphis to resume his football career. According to a release from the CFL, Manziel "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league". Express quarterback Zach Mettenberger was injured Saturday and unable to return to the team's 22-9 loss at Salt Lake and his status is uncertain.

Manziel became one of the most recognizable names in football during a Heisman Trophy-winning campaign at Texas A&M, leading the Aggies to an 11-2 record and an upset of the eventual national-champion Alabama Crimson Tide.

The statement from the Alliance said that Manziel "will report to Memphis tomorrow, where we all believe he'll benefit from the coaching and mentorship of Mike Singletary". A corresponding move was not immediately announced, but the league's waiver rules stipulate that the team would have to make a move with a quarterback.

Just three weeks after being released by the Montreal Alouettes for violating the team's contract, Manziel signed the Alliance of American Football's Standard Player Agreement, according to ESPN.

He immediately becomes one of the biggest names in the AAF as one of its few former National Football League first-round picks, notably among them Birmingham running back Trent Richardson. AAF chairman Tom Dundon said earlier this month that Manziel would not receive any special treatment in the league, and will get the same three-year, $250,000 deal that every player gets. In 2016, a domestic assault charge against Manziel in Dallas was dismissed after he took an anger management course and participated in the NFL's substance abuse program.

Manziel was a first-round draft pick by Cleveland, but quickly fizzled out there. The former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy victor was released from his CFL contract last month, with league officials announcing he had "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league".
