Amazon plans to launch satellites to offer broadband internet

Amazon plans satellite broadband for “tens of millions” of people

According to GeekWire, which spotted the filings, Amazon wants the satellites to operate between 367 miles to 391 miles above the Earth. Amazon will vie with Elon Musk's Starlink network, which past year launched the first two test satellites of a potential network of 12,000 that would provide speedy space-based internet access.

The mission would take the company straight against SpaceX which plans to create its own network of global internet satellites. Low Earth orbit satellites should apparently offer latency as low as 25ms, making it a genuine competitor to our less flashy land-based solutions. This region, hypothetically, covers more than 95 percent of Earth's total population. However, it will have to fight its way through the likes of SpaceX or OneWeb. Amazon later confirmed Kuiper Systems is its project. Amazon says it hopes to bring broadband to millions of people through the long-term project.

Amazon will still need to get approval from the FCC and other regulators around the world to move forward with Project Kuiper. It confirms its intent to partner with companies "that share this common vision", a GeekWire report revealed. Additionally, last month Softbank-backed OneWeb launched the first six satellites of its network, which plans to begin with a constellation of 650 interconnected satellites. Earlier this year, Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos' rocket company also signed a deal with Canada's Telesat to launch part of the satellite constellation.

Telesat plans to have satellites in 1,000-kilometer and 1,250-kilometer orbits, though it's not clear how many of its envisioned 292-satellite system would go in each orbit, since the target size of the constellation is 58 satellites above what the FCC approved for US market access.
