Netflix confirms it no longer supports AirPlay capability

Airplay is no longer supported for use with Netflix due to technical limitations.

If you have been struggling to AirPlay Netflix content via iOS devices on Apple TV, you are not alone. In doing this, the Netflix mobile app on iPhone and iPad can be used to control the streaming experience presented on the television. The drop of AirPlay support in Netflix's iOS app was first spotted by MacRumors, which found that attempting to access the feature resulted in an error message.

The days of beaming your favorite Netflix show to your Apple TV are officially over. As things now stand, users will still be able to stream content from an iOS device to an AirPlay-equipped TV; it just won't be from Netflix. Please try again later.

Netflix supported AirPlay streaming from iOS devices to Apple TV since 2013.

By accessing Netflix this way users can stream content on their iPhones and iPads to instantly play the content on their TVs.

It also means that the Apple iOS eco system is suddenly becoming "cumbersome" for iPhone and iPad users.

The updated app, expected to launch in May, will sell a-la-carte subscriptions to services such as HBO, Showtime, Stars, and others, but not include Netflix.

A growing number of Netflix subscribers with iPhone and iPad hardware have recently discovered that they are no longer able to cast TV shows and movies to Apple TVs or other AirPlay-supported hardware via Apple's AirPlay protocol.

We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. However, if AirPlay support is to be re-enabled, Apple and its third-party partners will need to work out a method for identifying devices over AirPlay so that Netflix can then optimize the content over AirPlay accordingly.
