Amazon to launch over 3,000 satellites to provide global internet service

Bezos has announced the appointment of Rajeev Badyal, former vice president for satellites at SpaceX, to lead Amazon's Project Kuiper.

Christened Project Kuiper, the aims of the program are the same as those of Project Loon: provide robust internet services to populations that can not be served by existing solutions.

Moving forward with the initiative, the project has already filed with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - the international organisation in charge of coordinating satellite orbits.

Amazon reportedly says that the project is one of its long-term plans that targets millions of people who lack conventional access to broadband internet.

Amazon will be launching 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit to "provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world", the company said. Its confirmation will make Amazon the latest FAANG member to take its terrestrial internet ambitions into space. These satellites will provide data coverage for 95 percent of the land where the population lives. Its constellation is projected to grow to over 12,000 ones in low Earth orbit.

Jeff Bezos, CEO at Amazon is said to have plans to elevate Blue Origin, his private space company from its startup mode.

The SpaceX Starlink satellite constellation will consist of 11,943 satellites in LEO.

Social networking giant Facebook is also developing an Internet satellite of its own, the report noted.

Badyal previously ran the satellite network division at SpaceX, which launched its first two test satellites previous year. After the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved an additional 7,518 satellites late previous year, SpaceX expanded the quota to 11,943 satellites.

Under Badyal's watch, Starlink launched its first two test satellites in 2018.

Starlink, as Musk's project is called, is set to begin launching satellites this year and according to the company will come online once 800 satellites are operational.
