Microsoft's Windows 10 May 2019 Update is now available for testing

This update is shipped to all Windows 10 versions prior to 1809

As said, these updates include several security patches, so Microsoft shipped fixes for its two browsers, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer, but also for other OS components like the Windows kernel and the Windows Graphics engine.

The company does still intend to have a 19H2 feature update and will distribute builds of that to Insiders later in the year. Microsoft has pointed out that this build will be limited to the Release Preview ring for an extended amount of time in order to address bugs and software issues.

In a fairly quiet update, perhaps the feature most notable is the splitting off of Windows search from voice assistant Cortana - a further sign of Microsoft's growing impatience with its also-ran product, as it moves towards the seemingly inevitable switch to using Amazon's Alexa by default.

Windows Insiders in the Release Preview ring-I assume there are at least 3 or 4 of you-can get the May 2019 Update now by navigating to Settings (WINKEY + I) Update & Security and selecting the "Check for updates" button.

Microsoft has just released a new batch of cumulative updates for Windows 10 devices as part of the April 2019 Patch Tuesday cycle. Note that Windows Insider Program is only displayed if your are signed in with an admin account.

Windows 10 users not already in the Windows Insider Program can get the May 2019 Update by joining the program. Click on the Link an account option and select the Microsoft account you wish to use.

While the Fast and Slow rings are usually buggy, the Release Preview ring provides builds only when the feature update is complete.

You'll be asked what type of content you want.

If you're in the Fast ring, recommended to switch to the Release Preview ring as in the coming weeks, Microsoft will start releasing early previews for the 20H1 update coming in 2020.

If you are now not an Insider and would like to test the May 2019 Update before it is publicly released, you first need to join the program.

Also, if you're already testing previews in the Windows Insider Program through Slow ring, it's not necessary to change your settings, as the code will be eventually the same in all the available rings.

Once you complete the steps after version 1903 is available to everyone, your device will gracefully stop getting previews, and the installation will continue to receive quality updates for as long as the feature update is supported. (Seriously, though, it's pretty painless.) For now, if you want to sample the new Windows features, though, use our tips above and dive in!
