Actress Felicity Huffman to plead guilty in college-admission scam

Felicity Huffman left the Boston federal courthouse last week. “My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions and... I have betrayed her,” Huffman said in a statement

The "Desperate Housewives" star said in a prepared statement Monday she accepts full responsibility for her actions and "will accept the consequences that stem from those actions".

"I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community", she said.

Huffman also said that her daughter had no knowledge of her fraud.

Conspicuously missing was Lori Loughlin, the other famous actress who has been entangled in the scandal (a.k.a. Operation Varsity Blues) alongside Huffman.

Huffman was among 50 people in what authorities have described as the biggest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the U.S. Justice Department.

Lori Loughlin, best known for her roles in Full House and more recently the Netflix original series Fuller House, is facing prison time for her role in a college admissions scheme. "This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life", Huffman said.

Huffman, the Emmy victor who stared in the TV series Desperate Housewives, was accused of paying $US15,000 disguised as a charitable donation to have a proctor correct the answers on her daughter's Saturday. Huffman is accused of paying for an impersonator to sit the SAT, which is used to determine college admissions, on behalf of her eldest daughter. TMZ has indicated the new time the feds want the guilty parents to spend in prison will be anywhere from four to six years, as opposed to the original two to three before the money laundry charged were added. UC Hastings Law professor Rory Little told the Times that charging the remaining parents with money laundering is an example of "plea pressure" because it can be applied in most cases where money is exchanged.

Parents would pay a Newport Beach, California college admissions company to help their kids cheat on entrance exams.

The newspaper also published a statement from Huffman in which she apologised for her actions.

The scandal involves 33 wealthy parents accused of participating in a scheme that involved rigging college entrance exams and bribing coaches at elite universities to secure places for their children.

Loughlin and Giannulli reportedly handed over $500,000 to a school coach to falsely state that their two daughters were recruits for the rowing team at the University of Southern California.

Besides USC, some of the universities targeted in the elaborate cheating scam include Yale, Stanford, UCLA and Georgetown.
