When Danny met Sandy: Grease sequel set for release

Deadline reports today that Alladdin screenwriter John August is now working on the script for the Paramount Pictures project.

A prequel to the 1978 musical is reportedly in the works, according to Deadline.

"Summer Loving" will tell the story of how Sandy Olsson (played by Olivia Newton-John in the 1978 film) and Danny Zuko (originally played by John Travolta) first met and fell in love. "Happy about the Grease news".

The title of the movie comes from a line from Summer Nights, a duet between the two Rydell High school kids and their vastly differing accounts of the night, with Danny boasting of sexual conquest down among the sand dunes, while Sandy thrills at the couple's emotional intimacy. Do we really need to see the literal moment Danny and Sandy meet each other and their beach dates? From the outside looking in, this prequel seems completely unnecessary. But August is a smart guy (he hosts a podcast about screenwriting called ScriptNotes) and he's a talented writer, so he's obviously aware of these issues.

"The only prequel I want is one of Rizzo!" said another. But as of now, we just know the story concerns Danny and Sandy's "fateful meeting", so hopefully it's easy to understand why we're looking at this through a furrowed brow.

The studio has tapped John August to pen the script.

The film when it came seven years later made a global star of Olivia Newton-John and confirmed John Travolta as one of Hollywood's most in-demand actors.
