Huawei 'open' to selling 5G technology to Apple

Apple's iPhone 2020 may have 5G trouble, but Huawei is eager to help

Meanwhile, Samsung turned down Apple's request to supply its 5G modem chip, with the South Korean smartphone giant saying that the supply volume was insufficient. Major OEMs like Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, OnePlus and others have either already launched 5G smartphones, or are working on it right now.

Huawei's Balong 5000 5G modem has created huge hype as a result of its impressive performance, and with up to 6.5 Gbps worth of bandwidth, that is hardly surprising.

So says Engadget, which has heard from a "source with knowledge of the situation" that Huawei is "open" to selling its 5G-capable Balong 5000 modem exclusively to Apple. Therefore, we are not sure if Apple would want to team up with Huawei.

Indeed, as a result of the delays Apple has supposedly lost confidence in Intel to deliver the chip, which could mean Apple will be stuck with 4G until 2021 - two years after some companies will have launched 5G phones. Instead, it may just be the Intel 5G modem or nothing, at the end of the day. While collaborating with Huawei might seem hard at the moment, doing so might help the company in terms of compatibility with China's 5G networks.

The heightened tension between the USA government and China's Huawei could also be one of the reasons for Apple to stay away from Huawei's 5G modem.

The relationship between Huawei and Apple is strained, and the Chinese company are embroiled in tensions with the government. If only to help Apple to ship out a 5G-capable iPhone within the next couple of years. In fact, there are even reports that the first 5G iPhone from Apple, even if its debuts in 2020, may not offer the best download speeds compared to rival devices.

We know that Apple's own testimony in court that it had previously considered moving away from Intel to supply 5G parts.

The US Government has not managed to get other countries to follow its hard line. Now, it seems Huawei is willing to change its terms for one brand - Apple.

This would give Apple the ability to build an iPhone that would support 5G networks built off of existing 4G infrastructure, as well as the "standalone" 5G networks that will follow, the report added.
