Following Assange's arrest in London on an unrelated USA hacking charge, Clinton said that he should be held responsible.

"It would be right to extradite him to Sweden, it would not be right to extradite him to America, at this point in proceedings", James said. The U.S.is seeking Assange's extradition.

She said: "This is all about Wikileaks and all of that embarrassing information about the activities of the American military and security services that was made public". A 2018 indictment, unsealed by the Department of Justice on Thursday, charges him with a single count of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion and alleges that he tried to help former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning gain access to the government computer system in March 2010.

Police arrested the WikiLeaks founder Thursday at the Ecuadorian embassy in London after Ecuador withdrew his asylum.

Assange has been living at Ecuador's embassy in London since 2012 when he sought refuge there after being accused of sexual assault in Sweden. If found guilty, Assange faces a maximum five years in prison.

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange could face a renewed investigation into an allegation of rape in Sweden.

Assange was taken to Westminster Magistrates Court after being arrested where district judge Michael Snow said that his claim that he had not had a fair hearing was "laughable". He had stayed inside the embassy building for seven years. Assange denies the allegation.

Assange's next court appearance was set for May 2 via prison video-link in relation to the extradition case, a process that involves several layers of appeal that could take years.

"Mr. Assange's behaviour is that of a narcissist who can not get beyond his own selfish interests", Snow said.

Valencia also alleged that Assange frequently clashed with embassy staff by accusing them of frequently spying on him for the United States government. He said Assange has a small child in France.
