Votes will rush to settle if the conservative government will earn a third term or have a Labor administration take its place.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that the Federal Election will be held on May 18th.

But he's begun the campaign with a strong pitch on the Coalition's economic management.

"Now is not the time to turn back".

"So it isn't just about the next three years, it's about what does the next decade look like".

All 151 lower house seats will be up for grabs in May, as will half the seats in the Senate.

Speaking to reporters ahead of officially launching his campaign in Melbourne at 11:30 a.m. local time, Shorten said that he was ready to deliver a "fair go" for Australia.

"So the choice to be made by Australians on May 18 is like it always is at every election, and that is, who do you trust to deliver that strong economy which your essential services rely on", Morrison said.

Morrison rose to political prominence when he was tasked with overseeing immigration policies of the country.

- The prime minister is chosen by the governing party from the House of Representatives.

The Labor opposition laid out its health spending priorities in last week's budget reply, promising to make cancer treatments and scans significantly cheaper.

Labor is campaigning heavily on health and education, arguing the coalition is yet to properly restore funding cut in a series of federal budgets. "We're ready, we've got the policies, I've got a united team, we've got a vision for the future".

He said Labor would be offering "lies and higher taxes", while the government had a positive agenda.

The measure will reportedly take effect the day after the Australian authorities call the election and will apply to ads containing references to politicians, parties, and electoral procedures, as well as various political slogans and logos.

During the vote, Australians are expected to elect members of the country's parliament, consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
