Billy Vunipola Defends 'Liking' Israel Folau's Controversial Instagram Post

Folau not welcome in NRL: Beattie

After Rugby Australia announced it was intending to terminate Israel Folau's contract over a homophobic social media post, many of his supporters encouraged him to make a code switch to league.

The 30-year-old, one of Australia's few genuinely world-class players, was informed on Thursday he would be sacked if he could offer no good reason for a pair of controversial social media posts.

Israel Folau could sue Rugby Australia on the grounds of religious discrimination if his current contract is terminated, an expert has claimed.

Footage of sacked rugby star Israel Folau delivering a radical Christian sermon in which he denounces people who celebrate Christmas and Easter.

While Lealiifano wouldn't comment on Folau's situation specifically, when asked about players' social media use, he admitted everyone had to be careful when posting.

Asked by an Australian reporter if he regretted what he said in his posts and how he was feeling now that his career was "all but over", Folau remained silent and hastily got into a waiting vehicle, before being driven away.

"Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Rugby Union have made repeated attempts to contact Israel both directly and via his representatives since 6.30pm on Wednesday, and at this point he has failed to communicate directly with either organisation", the statement read.

"We are firmly against any form of discrimination and believe rugby should be an inclusive sport where everybody is welcome, regardless of their race, gender, religion or sexual orientation", the RPA said.

Rugby Australia has reprimanded Folau in the past for targeting the LGBTQI community in his social media posts.

The stand-down comes after a joint statement from NSW Rugby and RA saying their views haven't changed and they still intend to tear up his multimillion-dollar contract.

While any of Folau's 331,000+ Instagram followers would be subjected to his post - including thousands of impressionable youths - it takes a lot more digging to see who simply supports Folau's position.

Folau took to Instagram to proclaim hell awaits "drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters". "I think the ARU have made the right call here".

Now, the Rugby Union Players' Association has come to Folau's defence, stressing the star remains an employee of R and is continuing to fulfil his contractual obligations.

Vunipola posted on Friday that he would not back down and unlike the Folau's image.

As the meeting was held in confidence between the player and his employers, Rugby Australia and the NSW Rugby Union will not comment on the discussions at the meeting.

"But that's why I believe there's a God".

'Following today's meeting the two organisations will update their respective Boards on the matter to consider next steps.
