CPSC warns against Rock’n Plays for babies over 3 months

The company said in a statement on Friday that children older than three months who have learned how to roll over should not use the Rock'N Play

A USA federal consumer agency has issued a warning over Fisher-Price's Rock 'n Play sleeper following reports that 10 babies have died after rolling over while in the seat. "And Consumer Reports" review found fatalities involving children younger than 3 months.

In response to the US CPSC, Fisher Price said in a statement the company had a "long, proud tradition of prioritising safety" with regards to its products.

"The loss of a child is a devastating tragedy".

Fisher Price's parent company Mattel told the New York Times that parents should use the provided harness to secure infants and avoid obvious hazards.

Since the release of the Consumer Reports investigation, the AAP has also called on the Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall the Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play Sleeper, as seen in the tweet below. It has no commercial relationship with any advertiser or sponsor on this site.

The Rock 'n Play Sleeper is a seat that includes vibrations and an incline to help babies sleep. All 10 were 3 weeks or older. They recommend that parents stop using it once their infants reach that age, or sooner if they "exhibit rollover capabilities".

In another post in 2016, Benaroch wrote: "The Rock-n-Play Sleeper ... is marketed and sold as a "sleeper.' You can tell, because the word 'sleeper" is in the name of the product".

"This product is deadly and should be recalled immediately", said Kyle Yasuda, MD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Tragically, that is not the case. This includes auto seats, strollers or other devices for sleep, all of which pose a risk that a baby could roll or turn into an unsafe position and then remain unable to roll back, leading to suffocation or strangulation.
