Former Obama's advisor faces charges in Mueller-related case

Ex-Obama counsel to be indicted for his Ukraine work in 2012

"This case was thoroughly investigated by the SDNY and that office decided not to pursue charges against Mr. Craig", Craig's lawyers said in a statement.

Former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig's lawyers reportedly said Wednesday that said Craig is expected to be charged.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Justice Department has kept Craig on its radar since 2012, the year he performed work for former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko - who was on trial for abuse-of-power.

U.S. President Barack Obama speaks with White House Counsel Gregory Craig in the Oval Office, June 11, 2009.

As a partner with large global law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in 2012, after he left the White House, Craig was hired by the Ukraine government to boost its image after having put the former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko through a trial widely criticized by Western governments as politically motivated.

Craig's case is one of several that originated in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election and were later referred by Mueller to other us prosecutors for further investigation. They acknowledged that Craig spoke to reporters about the report but denied it was part of a public relations campaign that would run afoul of FARA.

In a statement Wednesday night, the attorneys said the "government's stubborn insistence on prosecuting Mr. Craig is a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion".

In its settlement, Skadden said the firm had relied on "false and misleading oral and written statements" made by Craig, the Post reported sources close to the case as saying.

Craig's attorneys met with Justice Department prosecutors in recent days in a bid to avoid charges against him, a person familiar with the matter said. It has rarely been prosecuted since it was enacted in 1938 with the aim of countering Nazi propaganda.

Manafort, who later served for a time as Donald Trump's campaign chairman during the 2016 presidential race, has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison in connection with tax fraud, bank fraud, FARA and conspiracy charges related to his work for Yanukovych.

Yanukovych's government used the report to justify to the European Court of Human Rights Tymoshenko's pretrial detention.

In January this year Skadden agreed to pay $4.6 million to settle charges it lobbied illegally for Ukraine.

Craig becomes the second former Skadden lawyer who worked on the report to face charges. Van der Zwaan's case was brought by Mueller.
