Labour Party says United Kingdom should oppose extradition of Julian Assange to US

Over the next couple of years, Assange fought extradition to Sweden but the UK Supreme Court ruled against him in May 2012.

Labour's Stella Creasy tweeted a copy of the note sent to Sajid Javid.

The WikiLeaks co-founder was dramatically arrested on Thursday at the Ecuadorian embassy in London where he had been holed up for nearly seven years.

Media captionHe's been in Ecuador's embassy for seven years - but why was Julian Assange there in the first place?

Swedish prosecutors dropped the rape investigation into Assange in 2017 because they were unable to formally notify him of the allegations while he stayed in the embassy.

On Friday, Swedish prosecutors said they were examining the rape case at the request of the alleged victim's lawyer.

"We do not presume guilt, of course, but we believe due process should be followed and the [Swedish] complainant should see justice be done", the letter says.

"In this case, the suspected crime of rape would be subject to statute of limitation in mid-August 2020".

Inquiries into claims of molestation and unlawful coercion have already been timed out.

Julian Assange may yet face rape charges in Sweden as the battle for extradition of the WikiLeaks founder heats up.

If Assange loses in extradition court, he could appeal several times and ultimately try to have his case heard at the European Court of Human Rights - unless Britain has left the European Union by that time.

According to the Home Office, the home secretary can bring a limited number of factors into consideration when deciding whether to order a person's extradition.

"There's specific worldwide extradition law protection that prevents you from charging someone with additional (offences)", he added.

"Julian Assange can not be extradited to Sweden when the European arrest warrant against him was withdrawn as early as May 2017".

Jeremy Corbyn has called for the UK Government to oppose Julian Assange's extradition to the U.S. over allegations that he conspired to hack into a classified Pentagon computer.

The US Department of Justice has accused him of conspiring with former intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to commit "one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States".

But within 60 days from Thursday, when British police bundled Assange out of the Ecuadorean embassy in London where he had taken refuge seven years ago, USA authorities must submit a formal request outlining all the legal charges Assange would face if he is transferred into US custody. On Thursday, Ecuador removed the protection of political asylum, after the United Kingdom assured them that they would not put Assange in a position where he would face the death penalty or torture.

At the time, the U.S. government made it clear it hoped to prosecute Assange over the leak of the secret files.

His next court appearance is set for May 2 via a prison video link. He spent Thursday night in custody and is facing up to 12 months in prison for that conviction.

Before withdrawing Assange's asylum, Ecuador accused him of improper behaviour, interference in the affairs of other countries and spying.

She said it set a "dangerous precedent" where any journalist could face USA charges for "publishing truthful information about the United States".
