Lakers, Luke Walton finalize divorce everyone saw coming

Hall-of-famer Magic Johnson stepped down from his job as Lakers president earlier this week

"We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward".

The Lakers finished 37-45 this season, far short of the expectations after the team signed LeBron James in the offseason.

With James obviously having substantial pull in the Lakers organization, especially with some defined executive leadership roles up in the air, being somebody James likes does nothing but bode well for Lue. Walton even filled in for Steve Kerr during the 2015-16, guiding the Warriors to a 39-4 start before Kerr returned from dealing with health issues. Walton was hired in 2016 by then-Lakers executive vice president Jim Buss and then-general manager Mitch Kupchak.

Walton's job was the subject of much speculation for several months now, and it will be one of the hottest jobs on the market now.

Ball, who sat most of the second half of the season with an ankle injury, was slated to have surgery without the Lakers' knowledge, the report states.

"They came into work every day, no matter what criticism they were under, no matter what scrutiny they were under, they came in, watched hours of film, whether it was on us or other teams, next opponents", Josh Hart said Wednesday of Walton and his staff.

Rondo, who is on the sixth team of his career, praised Walton for his ability to relate to players.

If a president of basketball operations is put in place first, then he and Pelinka, or whoever else is running the front office can then conduct a thorough coaching search to find the right candidate for the job of bringing the Lakers back to glory.

Leaving the Lakers this summer could be great for Walton, who was basically in a no-win situation in LA.
