Major monster Koepka shares first-round lead at Masters

Spain's Jon Rahm and 2013 Masters victor Adam Scott are in a group on three under while four-time champion Tiger Woods is a shot further back on a congested leaderboard.

Englishman Ian Poulter and Italy's Francesco Molinari charged into the midway second-round lead at the Masters on Friday after overnight pacesetters Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka endured turbulent outward nines.

Three-time Masters victor Phil Mickelson, who started the day one off the lead, had a birdie and two bogeys in his first eight holes, finding trees on both sides of the fairway at eight to fall three-adrift on four-under.

DeChambeau had worked his way through the turn clinging to a one-shot lead, but saw it all come undone with a double bogey at the 10th.

"I was hitting it great all day, driving it well", he said. "So I'm off to a good start".

Soft conditions at Augusta National benefited the boomers in Thursday's opening round as Koepka, victor of three of the last six majors he has contested, world number two Dustin Johnson and Spaniard John Rahm all muscled their way onto the leaderboard.

The 43-year-old Woods was in a good groove early but started to look a bit unsettled after an errant tee shot at the par-four fifth hole where he made his first bogey of the day and then went on to miss several short putts.

"I felt like I played well and I did all the things I needed to do today to post a good number", said Woods, despite missed chances from inside 10 feet that cost him on the front nine.

Scott was treading water at even par through 14 holes but surged up the leaderboard to two under courtesy of birdies at the par-5 15th, the hard par-4 17th and the last hole.

"I've shot this number and won four coats, so hopefully I can do it again".

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, aiming to rebound from a first-round 73, was in the final group at 2pm.

"I made five birdies - that wasn't the problem", McIlroy said. "It's pretty much the same people that are staying with me".

While his best major showing is only a share of 15th at the 2016 US Open, Dechambeau stung Augusta National six birdies in the last seven holes, including four in a row to end his round.

Australian Jason Day (70), received medical treatment on the course after tweaking his back while hitting his drive at the par-five second hole.

Day, who withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational last month with back issues, reportedly re-injured his back while picking up his daughter before the opening round of the year's first major.
