Man ‘sets himself on fire’ outside White House, gets detained

Uniformed Secret Service police officers on Pennsylvania Avenue

He caused a commotion by lighting his jacket on fire before Secret Service agents stepped in and whisked him away. Agents are reportedly now looking to see if the man left behind any suspicious packages.

In a follow-up tweet, the agencies said, "the male subject has been transported to a local hospital with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries".

The suspect was "operating an electric wheelchair-type scooter" when officials say he set his outer jacket on fire. The incident also closed part of Pennsylvania Avenue to pedestrian traffic, and 17th Street Northwest to vehicular traffic. Uniformed Division Officers then respondedimmediately, extinguishing the fire and providing first aid. Portions of the White House complex were also locked down.

The incident occurred shortly after Trump spoke at the White House about the nation's 5G network.

The White House was put on lockdown for less than an hour.

The man is said to have lit his jacket on fire while he was wearing it after arriving on the scooter Friday afternoon.

"He is being treated for injuries".

A CNN reporter on Twitter cited a Secret Service spokesperson as saying there was no threat to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Fire officials are now said to be investigating the suspicious package.
