Million Fisher-Price Rock ‘N Play Sleepers Recalled After Infant Deaths

A warning was issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission about the Fisher Price Rock ‘N Play seat after reports of infant deaths

Toymaker Fisher-Price has recalled almost five million of its Rock 'n Play Sleepers after reports linked the product to dozens of baby deaths.

The commission said Friday that "over 30 infant fatalities have occurred in Rock 'n Play Sleepers, after the infants rolled over while unrestrained, or under other circumstances" since 2009.

Officials say parents and caretakers should stop using the product immediately and contact Fisher-Price for a refund.

The company is offering refunds to those who have purchased the sleepers.

NEW YORK (AP) - Fisher-Price recalled almost 5 million infant sleepers on Friday after more than 30 babies died in them over a 10-year period.

In a statement Friday, Fisher-Price said that it stood by the safety of its products and said it issued the voluntary recall "due to reported incidents in which the product was used contrary to the safety warnings and instructions".

Marta Tellado, president and CEO of Consumer Reports, said, "The Fisher-Price recall of the Rock "n Play is long overdue. I am glad to see this product off the market and urge all parents to talk to their pediatricians about how to keep their babies safe during sleep time and any time". Fisher-Price is a company based in NY, but its products are also sold elsewhere. "There is convincing evidence that the Rock "n Play inclined sleeper puts infants" lives at risk, and CPSC must step up and take immediate action to remove it from stores and prevent further tragedies".

The CPSC said parents should never add blankets, pillows, stuffed toys or other items to places where babies sleep - cribs, bassinets, play pens or inclined sleepers.

Last week, the CPSC had only cited reports of 10 fatalities - of babies 3 months or older - but a Consumer Reports analysis linked the popular sleeper to 32 infant deaths, between 2011 and 2018. But, Hoffman said, "we feel like this is a risky product".

More information about the recall can be found here. But given the number of deaths, and expert medical advice that babies should sleep on firm, flat surfaces, there were growing calls for the product to be recalled.
